Club Night Returns in September

Junior Club Night has finished for the holidays but will be back between September and October half term.  There are still plenty of opportunities to play tennis though with both our tennis camps and for those of you in the coaching programme, extra squad camps.

Match Results

A number of you ratings have gone up, so well done to you.  I have heard of the following improvements: Jack Leary goes to 9.2, Josh Sutton to 9.1, Ben Race to 10.1 and James Kerr to 9.2 – James also won the U12 Boys’ Singles at Mold a few weeks ago which is a great achievement.

Our girls’ U14 team have won their Division of Aegon Tennis, so congratulations to all of them.

Tennis Camps

Summer holiday camps now open for bookings – dates, booking forms and more information available on the website www.nestontennis.co.uk/tenniscamps.aspx  If you attend coaching you should have received information from Dan on the squad camps that are available to you. Get in touch if you need more information.

Fundraising

The last boot sale was a great success, our next sale is August 14th.

The Tesco/Sainsbury voucher schemes have now ended, thank you to everyone that gave their vouchers to the section.  We have ‘banked’ some to save towards projects next year and ‘bought’ some rounders equipment for use at tennis camps and other occasions.

Fixtures

See www.nestontennis.co.uk/dates.aspx for information.

Family Fun Day

Is this Sunday 4th July – lots of great activities for all ages, starting at 1pm. Entrance is free this year so why not bring a few friends down? The fun includes loads of kids’ activities from Parkgate pre-school, a bouncy castle, a hog roast, bbq and various sporting offerings. Wimbledon finals will be on the big screens too. Our section will be offering cream teas and cakes.  As all profits from this will go straight into section funds it would be great if any bakers amongst you could offer to make cakes to sell – please contact Carole Leary - mgyv38@dsl.pipex.com or 353 8510 – if you can help.

Match Results

Some Junior Wirral League results are now online here: http://www.wirraltennisleague.org/11.html ; our Under 14 team are looking very handy at the top of their division and some creditable results from the Under 18s. Results from U10s/U12s seem to be missing at the moment!

Lara Wedd achieved another 3rd place in a mini red tournament, this time at Neston; Mum Paula said ‘she loved playing on her home turf and played 7 matches to achieve this richly deserved result. That's 3 medals positions from in the last 3 tournaments she has played’ Absolutely brilliant, well done Lara!

Ratings: if you have been playing well and recording winning matches, your rating will be improving and you should receive notification of that from British Tennis – do let me know how you are getting on.  If you haven’t got a rating and would like one, you just need to sign up to British Tennis (it’s free and only takes a minute), more information here http://nestontennis.co.uk/britishtennis.aspx

Tennis Camps

Summer holiday camps now open for bookings – dates, booking forms and more information available on the website www.nestontennis.co.uk/tenniscamps.aspx

Fundraising

As well as making cakes for the fun day on Sunday, our next boot sale is on Saturday 10th July.  Please let me know if you can offer your help with any of the following:

  • Put up posters around Neston and local area the week beforehand

  • Help set up between 7am and 8am

  • Man (woman?!) the bbq/refreshments in one of 2 shifts, 8am to 9.30am or 9.30am to 11am

  • Help clear away at 11am

If we are to have any hope of getting new floodlights this year, we need to keep running the boot sales, but we will not be able to carry on without YOUR help.  Thank you.

The Sutton brothers, Josh and Elliot, played some great tennis in a tournament this weekend, with Elliot winning the U14 consolation singles and Josh reaching the semi-finals of the U12, while Fin Robinson reached the finals of both the U14 and U16 events – fantastic results all round. The most recent winner of our 50:50 draw was Michaela Halfhead.  Just £2 a month for a chance to win £50, and help the section (club membership only covers the court surface and clubhouse, not the nets, lights or pavilion).

The recent boot sale raised over £500 – all boot sale money this year will be put towards new lights for the top courts. If you can offer to help out one Saturday morning, please get in touch. The next sale is June 5th.

The ‘Rag Bag’ collection was a great success raising nearly £200. We intend to do this again in September so keep hold of any old clothes etc (sorry, we can’t store them in the pavilion until then). We have ordered some new benches with this money.

Well Done!

To Thom Jones, James Tomlinson and Harry McMaster for their great permormance in our Mini Green Open Tournament at the weekend. James and Harry reached the semi-finals and Thom only just missed out in a closely fought final.

New Coach

We would like to extend a warm welcome to a new member of the coaching team – Leigh Owen. Leigh is an experienced coach who will mainly be involved in our ever more popular mini tennis programme – for more details please see Dan’s newsletter below.

Talent/Tournament postponed

The planned session for squad players this weekend has been postponed – a new date will be advised shortly.

Fundraising

This weekend is ‘Ragbags’ weekend! Please help us to raise £500 for new benches and an outside clock by having a ‘spring clean’ of your wardrobe.  If you have any unwanted clothes, pairs of shoes, hats, bags, belts, curtains, towels, or bed linen, please place them in a bag and drop off at the tennis pavilion from Saturday 24th to Monday 27th April. Maxine has been giving out bags, but any old bag will do!

Keep up the good word completing the registration forms – it is crucial that we have up to date contact and health information, but for those with asthma in particular please can you make sure that your son/daughter has their inhaler with them when they attend any sessions

New Addition to Tennis Coaching Team at Neston CC!

To all tennis members,

I am delighted to announce that Leigh Owen will be officially joining the tennis coaching team, the week beginning 19th April 2010.

The Mini & Junior coaching programme at the club has continued to grow and develop over the last six months, to the extent where another experienced coach was required to deliver extra squad sessions.

I am very happy to have hired Leigh who is a very well respected coach on the Wirral and possesses a wide range of skills both in adult & junior coaching.

Leigh’s primary role will be the delivery of Mini Tennis sessions at the club, with the goal of Neston CC attracting and retaining more and more tennis players aged between 4&10 years old.

Leigh will also be available to club members for any private bookings. Please contact myself in the first instance if you would like to book a lesson with him.

I hope all members will join me in making Leigh feel very welcome, and enjoy this exciting addition to the tennis coaching team.

It is a great time to be a tennis member at Neston CC, with so many fantastic opportunities available for adults and juniors alike!

So I hope to see more and more members participating in our expanding coaching programme, and tennis standards at the club ever increasing!

Club Night Reminder!

Our junior club night recommences this Friday (16th April) and all juniors aged 5 and over are welcome to attend. Our fundraising efforts mean that this session remains free.  For those of you who haven’t tried it before it’s a chance to play some supervised tennis, get some tips on your game and have fun with friends, but it is not a coaching session: if you want to make improvements to your game you’ll need some more focused lessons - see the tennis website for more details. Refreshments will be available!

Club night times are:

4pm Ages 5 to 10 (Mini Tennis)

5pm Ages 10 to 12

6pm Ages 12 to 18

If you are unsure which session to come to please get in touch, and please remember your registration form for 2010 (attached) This is now the same as the squad registration form, so you don’t need to complete another if you have already done one this year.   If you haven’t already done so please also sign up for British Tennis here (it’s free!) https://www2.lta.org.uk/Membership/Join/

Junior of the Month

Junior of the Month is James Kerr. Dan says: "James continues to show a high intensity on court and a real determination to succeed. It is great to see a player take pride in their performance and strive to improve their standard. I have also been pleased with the desire to get out there & compete in tournaments as this is a sign of a committed, & competitive junior.
Good stuff James:-) "

Mini of the Month is Alice Goldsraw. Dan says:   “Alice has worked fantastically well in recent sessions and set a really good example for others in her group to follow.
Her understanding of racket techniques & court positioning have vastly improved and Alice is

starting to progress her skills as a result. Well done Alice:)”

Are you an inventor?  I have been approached by a company who is making a new science and inventions series for CBBC called ‘This Kid Could Change the World’. The series celebrates the imagination and ideas of children between the ages of 9 and 12 and encourages them to generate inventions or ideas which they think could have a positive impact on the world around us. No idea or concept is too big, too small or too strange; the company simply want to hear any and all ideas. A final selection will make it through to appear on the show where children will have the opportunity to develop their concept from its inception to its possible practical application. If anyone would like me to put their name forward, please get in touch, they are in the initial stages of casting and would like contact as many children as we possibly can to see if they have an idea, no matter how big or small, and would like to be considered for the show. The deadline for applications is 19th March 2010 and filming will commence April/May time.

Finally it’s a bit late notice, for which my apologies, but the hockey section takes place tonight and is open to all members.  Years 3 to 6 are welcome from 6.30pm to 8pm, admission on the door is £3 to members, £4 to non-members (max 2 per member) and there will be a snack bar selling refresments.

Both the mini junior players and our Tennis Leaders, will, we hope, enjoy the experience! Thank you to Ben, Luke, Ryan, Fin and Elliot and also to James who is doing his volunteer work for his Duke of Edinburgh award with us.

Court Lights

If you are playing under our floodlights, please remember to use them properly:

-                     Check the timer before you start playing if the lights are already on, as you must NEVER put the lights straight back on if they go out; the mechanism needs 15 minutes to cool down.

-                     If you put the lights on for too much time, please ask the bar staff to turn them out for you.

-                     Only switch the lights that you need on for the time you need them.

Time to Celebrate!

It’s our junior presentation evening this Friday – after Club Night at 7pm in the tea room – and there’s lots to celebrate! We have entered teams this year in the Aegon Tennis League (it was called the National Junior Club League last year), the Wirral League and the Monkhouse Shield, as well as held Road to Wimbledon and various box leagues and ladders.

Well done to everyone who has taken part in any competition, big or small, we hope you have enjoyed your tennis, win or lose.

All juniors are invited to join us for the evening – just £1 on the door; there’ll be a few snacks and a fun quiz as well as the award of trophies and certificates.

Juniors of the Month

September Junior of the Month is Hannah Lea-Swain, but it was a tough decision as both James Kerr and Rachel Schofield were also outstanding.

Mini of the Month is Cameron Wedd.  Well done to all of you!

Doubles Ladder And Box Leagues

A brand new junior doubles ladder is to start shortly – sign up sheets are in the pavilion; you don’t need a partner, Dan will match you up. All squad players will be automatically entered into a box league to play over the winter, but any junior is welcome to join in; both are  great ways of meeting new people to play and getting some matches played with others of a suitable standard.  If you are not in a squad and would like to be included, please let me know in the next few days.

Sponsorship Reminder

I know many of you have already brought in your forms and money (thank you very much!), but please hand in by Friday if possible.

Tennis Camp – October Half Term

Well Done!

A very big ‘Thank You’ to everyone who took part in our 24 hour fundraising – from Club President, Andy Wallis, to our youngest mini tennis players. I hope you all enjoyed the experience. Special thanks go to those who played the ‘graveyard’ shift in the dead of night and also to the mainstays of the organising, Mel and Max.

How Much Did We Raise?

We don’t know the final figure as all the sponsorship money isn’t in yet.  Please could you e-mail Mel how much you think you will be collecting (melsophie1@hotmail.co.uk) to give her an idea, and then drop the funds and sponsorship form off either at Club Night on Friday or directly to Mel – her address is

105 Parkgate Road
, just opposite
Earle Drive
.

I will say that the car boot sale was our busiest yet and we hope to be well into 4 figures.

The option to make an online donation is still available, just follow this link:

http://www.clubcharity.co.uk/donate/index.cfm?&Groupcode=1700NTC

Macmillan Coffee Morning

Parents - be part of the world’s biggest coffee morning on Friday 25th September.  Just drop in any time between 10am and noon to the tea room for coffee. There will also be a raffle, cake stall and hand-made jewellery and cards for sale.

Club Night

We are concerned about the amount of traffic on the club driveway especially during Club Night so we are transferring the sessions to the lower courts.  Please ensure that you drop off and collect your child(ren) safely.

If the weather is good, there will be another barbecue this Friday as we have a surplus of food in the freezer from the weekend.

Lost Property

There is a substantial amount of abandoned children’s clothing in the pavilion – do check if something has been lost, as it will all be going to the charity shops in a week’s time!

Enjoy your tennis!

FUNdraising day has arrived!

This time tomorrow our 24 hour sponsored marathon of tennis will be well underway with Club President, Andy Wallis, striking the first ball in our historic game tonight at 6pm. I did invite Andy Murray, but he said he was busy elsewhere! Thank you to everyone taking part, and I hope you have great fun doing your ‘Mini Run and Fun’ – remember there is no actual Club Night tonight.

Head Coach Dan is offering you the chance to take him on - £1 buys you 3 points to try and ‘Beat the Coach’ from 6pm to 7pm on Friday. (For ages 11 and over.)

The car boot is a sell out, great news, but come down early (8am onwards), enjoy breakfast by the Pavilion and grab some bargains. We will also be running our own table so if you have any items to donate to help raise funds please bring them down to the club tomorrow.

If you can’t come down and enjoy the fun with us, please support us by asking your parents to donate online and if you are a UK tax payer we can claim gift aid, every little helps – just follow the link from the website      www.nestontennis.co.uk

We also have some new Neston Tennis Sweatshirts; Tobe Uniform in Neston have offered us a special deal to assist our fundraising so if you would like your very own Neston Tennis top, please complete and return the attached order form.

The barbecue will be running from 4pm onwards until tomorrow evening, plus there will be a tuck shop and cake sale for the juniors – any cake donations gratefully received.

We’re trying to put the FUN into fundraising, so come down and really enjoy yourselves!

            Hope to see you later!

Club Night Returns!

Now that the ‘Summer’ holidays are over – and I hope you all had a great time no matter what the weather – Club Night will re-commence this Friday 4th September and run until October half term. Usual times:

4pm - Mini Tennis

5pm – Ages 10 to 12

6pm – Ages 12 upwards

American Doubles

There are still spaces available for this event on Sunday – you play in pairs, one adult, one junior; it’s great fun and Dan will match you up with a suitable partner if you haven’t got one. Sign up sheets and more details on the notice board.

Junior of the Month

Our Mini Tennis player for August is Jenny Strong who has been committed to her tennis and made a smooth transition from mini red to mini orange.  Very well done Jenny. No one has impressed Dan enough to be awarded Junior of the Month, so come on guys, try harder!

Squads

The timetable remains unchanged and there are spaces in some squads – full details here: http://nestontennis.co.uk/summerprogramme.aspx If you want to join in the programme and are not sure which squad would be the right one for you contact Dan, dan@nestontennis.co.uk  or, for mini tennis queries, Laura laura@nestontennis.co.uk .

Box League

If you haven’t already sent me your results – get them in asap, or they won’t count for this ratings run!

Fundraising

I hope that you have all signed up to take part in our 24 hour tennis-a-thon and are collecting sponsors like mad!  Fundraising means that we can keep our membership fees as low as possible, provide you with a free club night and great facilities, so please do support our efforts.

If you can’t play that day, you can still be involved by making asking an adult to make a donation, either by sending a cheque directly to the section or online, by clicking on the yellow ball on our home page -  www.nestontennis.co.uk .  All funds raised will be spent on the tennis section – on the remaining work to the pavilion to provide a decked seating area and towards an upgrade of our floodlights.

Enjoy your tennis!

Tennis-a-thon!

Our new fundraising event this year is a sponsored 24 hour ‘Tennis-a-thon’! The idea is that you sign up on the sheets at the club for a one hour time slot, then get some sponsorship for doing so.  Younger juniors can join in a sponsored ‘Run and Fun’ instead.

The event will start on Friday 18th September:

4pm Mini ‘Run and Fun’

5pm Junior ‘Run and Fun’

6pm 24 hour Tennis-a-thon starts

Juniors please note you may only play in the middle of the night if accompanied by a parent or guardian!  The main court lights will go off at 10pm as normal but play will continue with lit up balls! More Winners!

Congratulations to our all our junior teams playing in the various leagues – some great results coming back!  Win or lose you’re all doing your best, improving your tennis and being great ambassadors for Neston, well done!

Player of the Month

Our May winners are:

Junior player: James Kerr, for fantastic improvement and determination to succeed.

Mini tennis player: Callum Harrison, for 100% effort at all sessions.

Well done James and Callum!

50:50 Draw

Our June winner was Doreen Grey. I’ve attached another form for those that have yet to join in- or use the details to set up a standing order on the internet (but let me know that you’ve done it!). The more that join, the bigger the prize gets and the more money raised for the tennis section!

Grass Courts

Now that the promised barbecue summer finally  to be on its way, it's wonderful to be able to play on the grass courts. In order to keep the grass in tip top condition it is important to follow the club guidelines on their use:
-        Play should not start until 11.30 am. If we are lucky and not had rain for several    days, you may be able to play earlier, but check with the ground staff first.
-        At weekends, use common sense - the courts may have been closed on a Friday, but if we have had 24 hours clear of rain, the grass should be ok to play on once the dew has dried off. Always ask an adult if you want to put a net up.

And a reminder about our 'dress code'; you don't need tennis whites, but you do need to be respectable, which means tops should be worn at all times, no matter how hot it gets!!

Family Fun Day

Sunday 5th of July is Family Fun Day, part of ‘Marquee Week’, the series of events that raises money for the whole club.  There will be various sporting activities, bands, even dancing so there should be something for everyone. Non-members are welcome too, so tell your friends!

Fun Tennis Tournament

For adults and juniors. Pencilled in for the afternoon of Sunday 28th June, more details to follow shortly!

Enjoy your tennis!

Clubmark!

I am very pleased to announce that we have just been awarded Clubmark Status, which means we have been recognised for achieving excellent standards. Clubmark is the only national cross sports quality accreditation scheme for clubs with junior sections. It is built around a set of core criteria which ensure that accredited clubs operate to a set of consistent, accepted and adopted minimum operating standards, so it is a great achievement – and we are one of the first tennis clubs on the Wirral to attain our Clubmark!

Road to Wimbledon

A reminder that the boys’ tournament takes place this Friday at 5pm. (Girls’ the following Friday) Club night will be on as usual for those not taking part, but if you are aged 10 to 14 (ie born 1995 or later – it is your age on 1st January that counts!) why not have a go? Just e-mail me to take part.

Player of the Month for April;

Junior Player of the Month: Jake Bayliff

Dan says: “This player has impressed me hugely with a superb work ethic and attitude towards training and competing. A committed tennis player who sets himself high standards and takes great pride in his performance. Great to see Jake be promoted to the next LTA rating! I can honestly say it has been a pleasure to coach this player over the last month or so. Continue in this vein, don't slacken!!”

Mini Tennis Player of the Month: Philippa Carter

Laura says: “Philippa has demonstrated very good technical and tactical knowledge on court.”

Well done Jake and Philippa!

 Play Tennis!

Competition Time

There’s so much going on this year!

Road to Wimbledon

The prestigious tournament for the U14s (ie born in 1995 or later). Sign up sheets are on the main noticeboard: the boys’ competition takes place at 5pm on Friday 8th May and the girls’ at 5pm on Friday 15th May. Box Leagues

All squad players are automatically being entered into a free box league this summer – it’s a great way to play more tennis against opponents of a similar standard and, hopefully, improve your rating.  If you’ve not signed up for coaching (why not?!), but would like to join a box league, please e-mail me your name, age and British Tennis number and I’ll try and find a suitable box for you.

Singles Ladder

Junior Forum

A new way to get in touch and let us know what you think about the club! At 7pm on Friday 1st May Dan and members of the Tennis Section Committee will be available for an informal chat; so if there’s something you’ve been meaning to tell us, a compliment you want to give us, or you would just like to know who’s who, please come along to the tennis pavilion – parents and juniors welcome.

Fundraising

In order to maintain the fantastic facilities we have at Neston and provide the free club night to all you juniors, we need to top up the income from the membership fees.  We were very lucky recently to be awarded a grant from the Big Lottery Fund, Awards for All, to refurbish the lower courts, but we still need more!! So, please join in with our efforts:

50:50 draw

If you would like to enter the ballot please e-mail me your name, your proxy, if applicable, and British Tennis number - or sign up on the sheet on the tennis noticeboard. Juniors of the Month!

Once again Dan and Laura have had a tough time choosing our juniors of the month, but February’s winners are:

Mini Tennis: Lara Wedd for R R R R's!!!!!  Well done Lara!

Junior Tennis: Jack Leary for the second month in a row: once again he has shown a consistently high performance in all group and individual coaching sessions throughout the month!  Fantastic achievement Jack, keep it up!

Remember to tell all your friends about our open day on March 29th – 1pm onwards.  There will be offers on membership and great fun activities organised by the tennis and cricket sections, so it should be a great afternoon for anyone thinking about joining.    Full details on the main club website: www.nestoncricketclub.co.uk/openday.aspx .

We have entered the Road to Wimbledon competition again this year – the most prestigious event for U14s.  Win the club round, and you get to play in the county finals, win them and you get to play in a special event at Wimbledon itself!  Like last year, we will run the tournaments on club night, provisionally Friday 8th and 15th May.

Club night will start up again after the Easter holidays.

We also hope to start a Junior Forum too, a chance for you to give feedback and talk to coaches, tennis committee members and other juniors about what you think of the club!

The Summer Programme will start after Easter – if you are thinking of signing up for some coaching, please let Dan know as soon as possible so that he can make sure there are enough squads for everyone! (dan@nestontennis.co.uk)

Tennis Time!

We’ve a great year planned for our all our juniors: we’re entering teams in Aegon Team Tennis and the Wirral League, Under 14s will get the chance to play at Wimbledon through the Road to Wimbledon competition, Under 18s can shine in the Monkhouse Shield, plus various fun tournaments, mini tennis events and tennis camps.

Squads have been running all Winter, but it’s not too late to start brushing up your skills before the season really starts. You can see the schedule on the website under coaching, but if there isn’t a time that suits you, do get in touch with Dan anyway – he’d love to put on more sessions!

We’re planning an open day on March 29th, so if you have any friends who aren’t members, but think they might like to play, let them know – it should be a fun afternoon.  Full details on the main club website: www.nestoncricketclub.co.uk/openday.aspx .

Our ‘players of the month’ for January were:

Mini Tennis: Charlotte Enevoldsen for her vastly improved confidence on court, with a lot of hard work being put in recently and great improvement to her ground-strokes!

Junior Tennis: Jack Leary for his consistently high performance in all group and individual coaching sessions throughout the month! In addition, Jack has really knuckled down and has worked phenomenally hard on court, improving all aspects of his game.

Well done Jack and Charlotte, you obviously had a great month – keep it up!  February’s winners should be announced shortly.

Good news for those with younger brothers and sisters; at the EGM on Tuesday, a new category of membership was created for tennis players aged 4 and under.  Previously this would have cost £66 per year, but from the 1st April (the new membership year, not an April fool!) it will be just £24 per year, that’s just £2 a month!  So now there’s really no excuse for not joining in Laura’s great fun sessions for our youngest players!

Enjoy your tennis!
