Competition Time!

Have we got our very own Raffa or Venus? There’s only one way to find out!

This season the Tennis Section will be running tournaments to find the Club Champion in the following categories:

- Ladies’ Singles
- Men's Singles
- Ladies’ Doubles
- Men's Doubles
- Mixed Doubles

The mixed doubles will give everyone in the club the opportunity to enter this tournament, but please note the (very strictly enforced) restrictions on entry.

Restriction - 1st and 2nd team members cannot play with other 1st or 2nd team members in this tournament.

Don't have a partner? - don't worry you can still enter and your partner will be drawn from available players.

Format of play for all categories: best of 3 sets. Rounds must be played during August with finals day being early September.

The cost for each event is just £2 to help towards the silverware.

Closing date for entrants is Friday 25th July.

Registration sheets are on the notice board or alternatively you can register by email to melsophie@aol.com

Good Luck!

General Update

I’ve left you in peace for a while, but I hope you’re all enjoying your tennis, especially those of you lucky enough to go to Wimbledon.

And our men’s team is through to the final of the Cheshire Shield this weekend, so good luck to them.

Benefits include entry into the club’s Wimbledon ballot from 2009, an LTA player rating, the opportunity to access additional packages including other world class tennis events and a TeamCard loyalty card which gives you points when shopping with partner retailers. We have already been rewarded with an extra allocation of Wimbledon tickets, above, due to good sign up rates from members, particularly juniors, so come on seniors, join in too!

Junior News

Our boys’ U16 National Junior Club Team won the county finals and are through to the next round of this prestigious tournament. They play Hull at Neston tomorrow at 12pm (not 10am as I said in my junior e-mail, sorry) if you want to show them some support and see some great tennis.

Is it really summer…..?

It must be, because we’re planning another barbecue to go with Social Tennis Friday today and, hopefully, the opening of the grass courts. There will be an à-la-carte menu on offer for a very reasonable charge!

The tennis starts from 7pm.

I still have a small number of tickets for the Elvis night on Friday 30th May, so if you have an unexpected window of opportunity in your social calendar, do get in touch.

If you can’t make social tennis on a Friday, why not try Dan’s ‘Drills, Thrills and Matchplay’ on a Sunday morning from 10.30am until noon. Priced at just £5, but bound to improve your tennis! If you have little ones, for £4 they can do the fun mini tennis session from 10am to noon, while you get to work! No need to book, just turn up and play.

Also coming up……

- Thursday 5th June 6.15pm Australian Tournament
- Saturday 7th June our next fundraising car boot sale
- 10th to 15th June Liverpool International Tournament, ticket hotline 0870 1690 107

Tennis Update

Summary of Committee Meeting

Finance
Accounts have been produced to support an application by the club council for a grant which will hopefully pay for the re-sanding work to the lower astro courts. Arrangements for the work to be carried out will be made once the decision has been received.

Sponsorship ideas are being developed.

Coaching
A new Head Coach, Dan Stickland, has been appointed, and will start on the first of May. Questionnaires have been issued via e-mail to all club members to help Dan provide a programme that will meet everyone’s needs. He will also help with Clubmark application.

The club is again participating in the LTA’s support programme for juniors, which this year is directed at encouraging juniors of all levels to play competitively.

The tennis camp has again been very successful. Thanks to Jenny Rowland for organising so well.

Grounds
Work on the lower courts has been deferred while grant application is made.

The pavilion may be refurbished by the club if the planned extension to facilities goes ahead, this would ensure there was a kitchen available during building work.

Consideration is being given to allowing the hockey section to use the floodlit courts one night a week for training, plus a Sunday morning.

Events
First car boot sale is Sunday 6th April.

The Wimbledon Draw will take place after match training on Tuesday 22nd April. A separate e-mail will go out with full details. Contrary to what we had been informed previously, you do not need to be a member of British Tennis to be eligible this year, but from 2009 this will be a condition.

The Season Opener will take place on Friday 25th April, with a barbecue and social tennis. The cost will be a very reasonable £3! Friday nights will be social tennis night throughout the season, so come on down!

Tickets are going fast for the club social event on Friday 30th May (an Elvis tribute act and disco) with over half our allocation already reserved! Get in touch quickly if you want tickets.

The next committee meeting will be on Wednesday 23rd April, so if you have any comments or items for agenda, please get in touch.

Other items

Remember that match practice starts on Tuesday 1st April at 6.30pm, all welcome.

The ‘Riff Raff’ are looking for any male players who enjoy a sociable game to join their group, which they have described for me as follows:

Our regular activity is to enjoy games of tennis on a Saturday at 3.30pm. We are a male group, playing mostly doubles. Winning is important but only because the beer tastes better! The standard is probably best described as variable. Because a number of us are no longer fully employed, we have spawned a Monday am option. This caters for the retired, partly retired, those who can 'flexi' a Monday morning and those between jobs. We have also formed a 'loose' association with a Thursday night group.

Contact Daryl Griffin (darylgriffin10@yahoo.com) if you would like to join them.

Introducing Our New Head Coach
Dan Stickland

You’ll be pleased to hear that, after scouring the land, we have managed to secure one of the Midland’s finest young coaches, Dan Stickland. Dan will be officially starting at the club on the first of May, but will be visiting the club in the meantime. He has asked me to pass on the attached questionnaire to get an idea of what you would like from him. Please complete and return to me.

TEAM TENNIS

Match practice commences on Tuesday 1st April!
6.30pm onwards

Summary of Tennis Section Committee Meeting

We thought it would be helpful to keep you informed of what is going on ‘behind the scenes’ of the tennis section, so here is a brief update following our committee meeting last Wednesday.

Coaching

We have shortlisted three candidates for the position of head coach who we hope to interview in the near future.

We shall be looking for volunteers again this year to assist with our junior club night.

Grounds

Thank you to John and Steve for making the new net measurers and for their work on the pavilion gutters. Council have approved the re-sanding work on the lower astro courts following the success of the work on the top courts. This should take place early in the season. The nets on the lower astro courts are becoming warn, so replacement will be considered once the re-sanding has been carried out.

Bob Cooke has improved the lighting to the top courts, (thank you for all his hard work) but a longer term plan is needed for their replacement. A working party will be set up to consider this.

The pavilion still needs internal refurbishment, this will be considered when have sorted more urgent matters out.

Events

Tennis Camps
Leaflets being distributed to local schools this week, dates of camp 26th , 27th and 28th March. Full details on website.

Car Boot Sale
First date Sunday 6th April. Later sales may take place on Saturdays, but we hope to hold a sale the first weekend of each month until October.

Wimbledon draw
22nd April – although there may be a football match on the big screen if Liverpool make it through to Champions’ League semi-final, my sources say this is unlikely!!

Season Opener
25th April

Clubmark

We need to set up a working party to start work on the LTA’s scheme, which is intended to reward and recognise tennis clubs, once we have a new head coach.

Sponsorship

We are putting together a package that we can offer potential sponsors so that we can raise funds for the section.

Next Meeting
26th March, so if you have any comments or agenda items, do get in touch.

  • 18th  February 2008

Get ready for the new season!

Vicki Basnett, our first team captain and coach, will be back on Tuesday evenings until Easter for the popular ‘social tennis with tips’ session. The session starts from 6.30pm and Vicki is there from 7.30pm until 9.00pm with the charge a very reasonable £2. After Easter when Tuesday becomes match night, we plan to move adult social tennis to Friday evenings. Please also note the new time for the Tuesday morning session of 10.00am to 12 noon.

Our social tennis season opener will be on Friday 25th April, so put the date in your diaries and we will send out the details nearer the time.

Remember to join British Tennis, if you have not already done so, by following the link http://www.lta.org.uk/Membership/default.htm especially if you want to be in the draw for Wimbledon tickets this year.

Another date for your diaries is Sunday 6th
April, when the first car boot sale of the year will take place.

And finally news of your committee: following the AGM, we now have some new members, Mel Brooks, who is to take over as treasurer, Sally Cole and Steve Race who will help Gerry with the juniors. Margaret Robson, Angela Benson, Jon Hayley and Coral Richards have all stepped down from the committee, we owe you a big thank you for all your hard work. We always need extra help on hand to organise various events, so even if you feel you can’t commit to regular committee meetings, but could help now and then, do get in touch.

LOTS GOING ON THIS SUMMER!

Player of the Month

Head Coach Dan is now making an award to the junior and mini tennis player who he considers have earned a special mention each month. Congratulations to the first recipients of this award in June:

Junior Tennis: Felix Birtles for his great work ethic.
Mini Tennis: Niamh Bannon for her great attitude, she’s always smiling!

July’s winners will be announced shortly.

Monkhouse Shield

Our team (Sam, Daniel, Niall and Connor) have won the second round of this prestigious competition, well done and good luck with the next round in August.

Summer Coaching

Squads will continue throughout the holidays; if you will be away, you can book and pay for just those weeks you are around. Club night will also be continuing.

The next Tennis Camp is Wednesday to Friday next week, there are still some places available if you book quickly. Campers had a fantastic time last week – there’s a great slide show of pictures on the website, looks like Dan got soaked in the water fight! (www.nestontennis.co.uk/tenniscamps.aspx) The format has changed slightly, now two days are tennis based activities, with the third a fun mini-olympics – well done to Steve for winning gold, Harvey for silver and Megham for bronze at our first Olympics!

Box League

I know there are still some matches to be completed, so the closing date has been extended to the end of August, but make sure you finish by then!

Junior Tennis Trip

Dan and Laura are hoping to organise a club trip for juniors in the Autumn; ideas so far include bowling or a trip to Laser Quest, but do get in touch with your ideas.

Tennis Pavilion

We hope to develop our pretty wooden pavilion so that it can become a base for the tennis section, particularly the juniors; we’ve got lots of ideas, but we like to hear from you too to make sure we get it right. We have to raise the funds to do this, for example from our car boot sales, so make sure you come down and support us at the sale this Sunday morning!

Mini Tennis

To encourage all you mini tennis players to come down and practice, guidelines for court sizes, rules and net heights will be put up by the astro court nearest to the cricket nets, but remember you can adjust any net to the right height for your level of tennis – the net measurers will shortly be colour coded to make this easier!

Enjoy your tennis!

  • 1st June 2008

More Congratulations:

Mini tennis sessions: £28
Medal programme: £42

This covers the seven sessions until the week ending 20th July.

There are still some spaces available, so if you haven’t booked any coaching, check out the summer programme on the website (www.nestontennis.co.uk/summerprogramme.aspx) then get in touch with Dan on 07906 047350.

Car Boot Sale

Our next one is on Saturday 7th June; pitches are just £8 if booked in advance, or if you’ve nothing to sell, come along anyway to support the club – remember the money we raise goes towards club night and other improvements not covered by the membership fees, for example we would really like to make the pavilion more habitable!

We also need volunteers to man our refreshments stall, and any quality items you could donate for us to sell, eg toys, books, ornaments, computer games, so please let me know if you can help

Enjoy your tennis!

  • 21st May 2008

- To the Girls’ U18 and Boys’ U16 Teams for reaching the county finals of the National Junior Club League this weekend, and good luck. Commiserations to those teams who didn’t qualify, but we’re very proud of all your efforts.

A Quick Reminder

Whilst there is no club night this week, remember that new Head Coach Dan will be down at the club on Sunday afternoon from 2pm to 4pm to answer any questions you may have about him and his coaching plans for you.

Dan has some fantastic ideas for the Junior Section, so come down for a sneak preview on Sunday.

Remember to complete and return the questionnaire if you haven’t done so already, either via e-mail to me, or to the envelope on the tennis noticeboard, (and thank you to those who have); this is your opportunity to have a say in making Neston the kind of club you want it to be.

If you want to bag a bargain, and support the club too, come down to the car boot sale on Sunday morning.

And finally, while Juniors do not get invited to the club AGMs and EGMs, I thought you may be interested in the grand plans of the club as a whole for improvements to facilities, in particular the clubhouse and new hockey pitch. You can get the full details by visiting the club’s main website www.nestoncricketclub.co.uk .

See you soon.

Get Ready for Club Night!

Remember that there is a ‘special edition’ of club night tomorrow, with new coach, Dan, timings as follows:

4pm to 5pm Mini Tennis (ages 5 to 8)
5pm to 6pm Young Juniors (ages 9 to 11)
6pm to 7pm Older Juniors (ages 12 upwards).

Please complete and return a questionnaire and registration form so that we can provide you with the kind of tennis that you really want and join British Tennis by following this link if you haven’t already done so http://www.lta.org.uk/Membership/

I have now got a number of fantastic volunteers to help with Club Night, but I still need more so that we can share the fun around. You don’t have to be a tennis player yourself; you can help with organising games, doing the register, supervising small groups and so much more!

I also need volunteers who like early mornings to help run our fundraising car boot sales – most of the money we raise from these events helps to pay for the coaching on club night, plus this year we want to renovate the tennis pavilion so that it can be used as a base for the juniors as well as making it easier to organise barbecues and other social events.

Our first boot sale is on Sunday, the sixth of April, so if you can help, or would like to book a pitch, do get in touch. More importantly, come down and support the section on the day – you never know, you may find the bargain of a lifetime!

See you soon.

Introducing Our New Head Coach
Dan Stickland

You’ll be pleased to hear that, after scouring the land, we have managed to secure one of the Midland’s finest young coaches, Dan Stickland. Dan will be officially starting at the club on the first of May, but in the meantime will be visiting the club on the following dates:

Friday 28th March
Dan will be at the club from 10am onwards, meeting the coaches and kids at the tennis camp and finding his way around.

In the evening, he will run a junior club night with times as per previous years ie:

4pm to 5pm Mini Tennis (ages 5 to 8)
5pm to 6pm Young Juniors (ages 9 to 11)
6pm to 7pm Older Juniors (ages 12 upwards)

Volunteers will be helping to run some of the session so that parents have a chance to talk to Dan about the coaching sessions they are interested in. In the meantime, please complete and return the enclosed questionnaire from Dan to tell us what you would like us to provide in terms of tennis at the club. Don’t forget we need a Club Night registration form completed and returned for each junior too.

Sunday 6th April
Dan will pay a quick visit from 2pm to 4pm; the first hour to be devoted to queries about adult coaching, the second about juniors.

Friday 11th April
Friday 18th April
Dan will run club night as normal, hours as above. He cannot make the following Friday due to prior commitments, but we hope to run clubnight with volunteers.

May the First Onwards
The new coaching programme will commence and we hope you are all ready to support our new coach! More details will be on the website www.nestontennis.co.uk/coaching.aspx

NEW BOX LEAGUE

The current LTA ratings run ends on 16th March, so we thought that we would try and squeeze another box league in before then so that you are all raring to go at the start of the season.

If you think it’s not for you, why not? It’s a great way to play matches with other players of your standard, you can fix a time that suits you and you’ll improve your tennis. All you need is a rating, which you get by applying for FREE membership of British Tennis ( follow this link if you haven’t already done so: http://www.lta.org.uk/Membership/MembershipReview ) so what are you waiting for?!

Closing dates for entries is 15th February, and a box usually consists of five players, with separate boxes for boys and girls – that’s only four matches to play. The winner of the box gets a better rating, the lowest ranked player drops a rating – unless you are on the starting rating of 10.2. To take part, just e-mail me your name, date of birth British Tennis Membership number and current rating. There’s no entry fee to pay so there’s really no excuse.

Want to know more about ratings, follow this link:
http://www.lta.org.uk/PlayAndCompete/CompetitivePlay/RatingsAndRankings/AboutRatings/default.htm?BSMGuid=0a093480-40ea-4986-87da-45419ec0672b

Hope to hear from you soon.
